With new telephone numbers in high demand, the Louisiana Public Service Commission approved the addition of the new 457 area code to the existing 318 area code region which covers northern Louisiana, serving cities such as Alexandria, Bossier City, Monroe, Ruston and Shreveport, as well as many other smaller communities including LaSalle Parish. This process is known as an area code overlay.
