The year was 1939 and the world found itself on the cusp of one of the most monumental wars of modern history. Young Clarence Durham of Urania, one of seven siblings, was only 16 years old and wanted to join the armed services like his older brother Farris had done. Farris had enlisted before Germany invaded Poland and was stationed in the Philippines when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. He gave his life in one of the early battles that ensued after that invasion. The loss of his brother inspired Clarence to enlist, but as a 16-yearold, he had to have his parent’s permission. His mom, Mary, having just lost one of her sons, refused to sign the enlistment papers.
