The Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s 2024 football playoffs are currently in limbo as the association deals with a lawsuit from a member school.
Early Friday afternoon, November 8, the LHSAA distributed a press release noting that the brackets for the upcoming football playoffs will be delayed “due to ongoing litigation with one of our member schools.”
The release goes on to say the situation could affect all 307 schools that participate in football across the state and given the repercussions of the decision made, the LHSAA will withhold all eight postseason brackets until the legal process is concluded and the matter is fully resolved.
The brackets were to be released this Sunday, November 10.
More information was later learned that the litigation involves University High School of Baton Rouge, who had to forfeit a majority of their games due to ineligible players. They exhausted their appeals through the LHSAA and are now fighting the ruling in court. To make matters worse, the court date for their hearing is not until November 18. Information learned is that the LHSAA is trying to have the hearing expedited in order to resolve the playoff situation.
With all state offices closed over the weekend and Monday, Veterans Day, there is a real possibility that no playoff games will occur this Friday, the first week of postseason play.
If the hearing is not held this week and has to wait until November 18, the postseason would be delayed even further with the first round not occurring until November 22.
The situation may also affect where the state championships are held this year as it is unknown if the Superdome in New Orleans would be available for any future date.
