When I was a kid, houses basically had two doors: a front door and a back door. That was it – no side doors, additional exits or entrances – just two doors, and if you were lucky the doors had screens to keep out the varmints. We weren’t lucky, neither did we have central heating or cooling or even an air conditioner stuck in the window. There was an old attic fan that ran continuously in the summer pulling a strong breeze through the opened windows. As a result, we kept the doors closed to keep out the varmints and windows open to pull in the cool air.
