70 Years Ago April 15, 1954

At Save-Way Super Market, three boxes of Betty Crocker cake mix were 89 cents, a half-gallon of Clover Leaf ice cream was 69 cents and three lbs. of smoked sausage were 98 cents. They also sold live black and white rabbits for Easter.

Lt. Glen E. Drewett has reported to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md., where he will attend the Army’s ordinance school. Lt. Drewett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn W. Drewett of Jena, received his commission from LSU upon his graduation as a petroleum engineer in June 1953. While at LSU, Lt. Drewett was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and was cadet lieutenant colonel of an ROTC unit at the university. He also served as commanding officer of the university’s unit of the Perching Rifles, a national honorary organization, during his senior year.

“The season for taking bullfrogs and lagoon frogs closed April 1st for the months of April and May,” says L. D. Young, Jr., director of the Louisiana Wildfire and Fisheries Commission. Dealers have a 10-day period to dispose of their stock, but no frogs may be bought or sold after April 10. When the season reopens June 1st, frogs may be taken by means of grabs or other devices which do not puncture the skin or redden the meat. No license is required unless the frogs are sold, in which case a $5 commercial fishing license is required. There is no limit on frogs.

At Pop’s Drive-In Theatre the movies playing were “Remains to be Seen,” “Rebel City,” “Assignment in Paris,” “Second Chance,” “Lost Women,” “Terror on a Train” and “Little Big Horn.”
