The LaSalle Parish Police Jury appointed a new Superintendent during their regular June meeting held Monday night, June 12, at the LaSalle Parish Courthouse.
Clifford Boyd, who has been employed by the Jury for 15 years, was promoted to the Superintendent position, replacing longtime Superintendent Ricky Jones.
The promotion was effective June 13 along with Jones being moved to Crew Leader with the same effective date.
The Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Jury’s crews, which includes all road maintenance, culvert installation, etc. Each month the Superintendent submits a work schedule to the Jury for approval, detailing projects for the month.
In other business, the Jury heard an update from LSU AgCenter County Agent Silas Cecil on all the projects held during the past year.
Cecil began by thanking the Jury for all of their support throughout the year and noted that despite the many challenges 4-H has encountered during the past three years, he is optimistic about its future.
“Back in 2019, our numbers were up and things were looking really good,” Cecil said. “Then 2020 came and we all know what happened then. We couldn’t go into the schools and our numbers dropped.”
He noted that 2021 was nearly an extension of 2020 and by the time this past school year came, the state had enacted new enrollment procedures, making all enrollments online through the internet, which made it nearly impossible for students to join.
“Not only where the forms long but if they had internet like I have at my house, they couldn’t even get on to enroll,” he said. For this coming year, enrollment is still online, however, Cecil said he has taken it upon himself to print out the enrollment forms to provide for students when he visits the schools.
The agent noted that the parish will have a new nutritionist soon with the addition of Madison Willis. Willis is expected to spend quite a bit of time in LaSalle promoting various programs and events.
He also informed the Jury about an invasive breed of worms that has been discovered in LaSalle Parish.
“We believe we have discovered an Asian Jumping Worm here in LaSalle, the first the state has seen,” he said. “These breeds are much more aggressive than Nightcrawlers and one group of these worms can actually jump up to a foot.”
In other business, the Jury voted to:
-Approve the Superintendent’s May deletions and June additions schedule of work.
– T r a n s f e r $43,500.00 from the General Fund to the Criminal Court Fund.
-Approve The Jena Times Olla-Tullos-Urania Signal as the official journal.
