Johnny Bench was raised in Oklahoma and was the valedictorian of his class in Binger, Oklahoma. As a 17-year-old, Bench was selected 36th overall, by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round 1965 Amateur Draft playing for the Buffalo Bisons in 1966.
