When Thomas A. Smith invented this new contraption, he wasn’t sure what to call it. The Thomas A. Smith Electric Rifle was designed to help police officers apprehend and safely take into custody unruly and sometimes crazed suspects. When the TASER was introduced police departments wanted no part of it. It was a strange contraption with two prongs shot into a suspect to temporarily disable them so they could be cuffed.
