Despite the fact that the Vikings had settlements in the New World five hundred years before Columbus came; despite the fact that the Spanish and French sent explorers to the newly discovered land to look for riches and territory; despite the fact that there were tribal cultures already spread across the vast land-despite all this, America did not truly come into being until the English came to Jamestown and Plymouth Rock, and started permanent settlements of people looking for a better life.
