One of the oldest – if not the oldest – homes in Jena, has been fully decorated with flags and other patriotic materials just in time for Flag Day, June 14, and Independence Day, July 4th. The home located on Francis Street in Jena was built in 1905 by Thomas Marion and Mary James Francis with lumber from an old sawmill located on Hemps Creek near where the Jena Girls Softball field is now located. The home was originally built as a dogtrot house, but in later years the center opening was closed off with the space used by residents. When the home was constructed, an outdoor kitchen was built away from the home. In later years, the couple’s son and family, Pomplow and Myra Francis, occupied the home.
